Watchword: Print for Protest

Watchword is a serialized newsprint publication in collaboration with RISD MFA Printmaking Group: Prints for Protest. I republished an excerpt from Susan Sontag essay Posters: Advertisement, Art, Political Artifact, Commodity included in the Art of Revolution book edited by Dugald Stermer. This book compiled a collection of ninety six posters designed by cuban designers for The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), The Organization of Solidarity with the People of Asia, Africa and Latin America (OSPAAAL) & Commision of Revolutionary Orientation (COR). I purchased this book during my travel grant to Cuba.

My ongoing interest in collaborative design led me to contact the graduate students from Printmaking. They started a poster non–profit campaign through IndieGoGo in response to the results of USA presidential elections. I proposed the idea of combining their posters with Susan Sontag essay as way to contextualize the power and influence that poster design has as an active tool for political activism and resistance. The foldout newsprint publications were given away during the 2017 Yale Art Book Fair.
